KVM is hardware virtualisation: the machine has its own kernel and firmly allocated resources. Container technologies such as OpenVZ and LXC share the kernel with neighbours, resources are often oversold, and you cannot load your own kernel modules. For predictable behaviour KVM is the safer choice.
